My vote goes to the upcoming Ford Mondeo. Yes, it's been out in NA as the Fusion for quite sometime now but I'd get it with the 2.0 TDCI engine. With 180 horses and almost 400 Nm of torque on hand, the thing has enough squirt to stay first until the next set of lights.
The trump card of the Mondeo over the Fusion is the more practical 5 door shape which is great for chucking in more stuff easily.
Then of course you get the trademark handling from Ford's European arm.
So, what would you pick as your daily midsizer?

Fucking Europe getting things we should.

I'd go for an NA spec 1.8T Passat with a 5-speed manual, but I'd give it a tune, an exhaust, a stiffer clutch, and some bigger brakes. Yes, I know "warranty=voided" but I would daily a car set up like this because it's reliable power. It'd make about 215-225hp, and 220-240ft-lbs, making it a quick big comfy midsizer

Or the more useful if you will, current estate version.
or rather the 2014 version.
Which will come in (rumoured) 1.0, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0litre ecoboost engine, along with 1.5TDCi and 2.0TDCi diesels and start at £30,000.

For a midsize this is it but Mazda hates us so it's a no go.
Honestly My favorite midsize is the 6 but I think it's a little too exciting for a salt of the earth type car so I will give an honorable mention to what I think the best salt of the earth car on sale right now.
I know it's a full size and not a mid size but it is a big fwd base model 4 cylinder nothing really fancy or special but it's just frickin beautiful and I would rock one as a commuter car in a heartbeat.

Warranty is a word that doesn't exist in my vocabulary so it's cool

I do have to say, the new Impala gets rid of the rental car stigma pretty well.

I had a looksee at Ford's German website and the engine choices are pretty interesting. Shame the configurator isn't fully up and running. Rims don't change and no interior views just yet.

The optima has really grown on me lately. Lots of tech and good economy.

Either a Fusion Titanium or a Mazda6. Maybe a Subaru Legacy or a Kia Optima.

Are you running on hydropneumatic suspension?

The wonderful Hydra, yes.

Definitely the Mazda 6. I'm hoping they bring a speed 6 version back. It definitely punches above it's weight in the looks department.

Funny you say that. That's exactly what I daily drive(Fusion not Mondeo). 1.6L ecoboost tho because we can't get the damn diesel.
I haven't driven the Mazda6 but I have driven the rest and I can say with confidence that the Fusion is the best handling midsize car in North America(except maybe the Mazda6?).
It's a great car and I'm really pleased with it.

Not midsize, no care.
370hp for $30k.

Ye', the U.K. Ford configurator wasn't working for me either.
It's a good looking car with a good range of engine choices but I know what my next car will be already and it isn't a Ford.
